Roxarsone not used in the Australian chicken industry
Roxarsone (or 3-Nitro®) has not been used in the Australian chicken industry since 2012.
Roxarsone was a registered veterinary medicine which historically was used to enhance flock performance, and occasionally as an aid in control of coccidiosis, a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract of poultry.
Use of this product by Australian chicken producers was phased out and ultimately discontinued by 2012. This was prompted by a U.S FDA study back in 2011 showing the potential for residues to be found in chickens.
The ACMF's enquiries to current and past registrants of this veterinary medicine confirm that there have been no sales of this product to the chicken industry since 2012.
